This lesson shows you how to hold a guitar and a guitar pick properly. Developing good habits early will lead to more comfortable, relaxed playing.
Balance the guitar in your lap, keeping it flat against your body and perpendicular to your legs. If you are right-handed, your right arm should comfortably reach the playing area with your right elbow easily flexed at the tailpiece of the guitar. You should be able to strum up and down without any interference from the guitar. This should be no problem with most electric guitars. Acoustic guitars tend are wider and larger so you need to make sure they fit comfortably in position.
If you're right-handed you can balance the guitar on your right thigh. If you like to play with your legs crossed, then you would balance the guitar on your left thigh when it is crossed over the right thigh. This is the position used by classical guitar players.
Hold the pick so that the bottom triangular part peeks below the thumb. The index finger is curled but relaxed - watch the video for the correct position.
